The basic documents required for a civil wedding in Santorini

To get married in Santorini, you and your future husband/wife both need to have the documents listed below. All the documents should be translated to Greek by the Greek embassy of your country or the legal department of Santorini’s Town Hall.

• Passports
• Full birth certificates
• Certificate of non-impediment to marry or marriage license
• A Death Certificate or a Divorce Certificate if you have been married before
• Any other documents required depending on the laws of your country

Note: There might be more documents required for your wedding, depending on your home country or religion, if you opt for a religious wedding instead of a civil one.

For the wedding to be legal, the couple is obligated to register the wedding documents to the local council within 4 days of the wedding, otherwise, the wedding won’t be legal.

Keep in mind that the paperwork might take up to 6 months to be collected and validated, so you need to arrange everything well in advance. If you want to avoid the bureaucracy and the hassle and get married faster, there’s an option: You can get married in your country first and then have a symbolic wedding in Santorini, which is very common. There won’t be any difference in the ceremony, but you’ll save a good amount of the time and money needed for planning a legal wedding in Santorini.
